Overcoming hardship takes dedication, and even more so, the strength of a community coming together—Stepping Stone Ministries is a testament to that. Their story is one of resilience, teamwork, and the impact of AmeriCorps and our Community Builder Program.

Our newest Host Site, Stepping Stone Ministries, is an organization that has been a beacon of hope for people experiencing homelessness and requiring respite care in the Bismarck/Mandan area. When a devastating fire tore through their building in October 2024, it could have meant the end of their mission. Instead, it marked the beginning of a new, transformative chapter for the ministry. Because of Souris Basin Planning Council's Community Builder Program, they are able to continue their mission, reopen, and grow their long-term stability.

Mission & Impact

Stepping Stone Ministries is all about providing a safe, healing space for people experiencing homelessness who are recovering from illness or injury. They offer more than just shelter—they help people rebuild their lives, find stable housing, and regain independence. Their work is essential, because having a place to heal means a better chance at long-term stability.

"We believe that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, deserves access to quality healthcare and a safe place to heal. Our mission is to provide medical respite care for persons experiencing homelessness in Bismarck/Mandan, offering a compassionate hand to those in need." - Stepping Stone Ministries CEO, Sister Idelle Badt

The Fire That Changed Everything

On October 5, 2024, strong winds and dry conditions fueled a fire that severely damaged their facility, leaving them without a place to serve those in need. In the face of this loss, their community rallied around them—and that’s where we stepped in!

SBPC's Role in Making a Difference

To help Stepping Stone Ministries get back on their feet, we’re bringing in three AmeriCorps State Members and one VISTA Member. These Members aren’t just helping to rebuild a building— they’re here to strengthen the organization for the long haul.

  • AmeriCorps State Members will be hands-on, helping with mentorship and companionship, volunteer coordination, rebuilding projects, fostering independent living skills, and providing critical care services, all while making sure daily operations can continue.

  • The VISTA Member will focus on big-picture sustainability—securing funding, building partnerships, and creating long-term solutions to support Stepping Stone’s mission beyond the immediate crisis of the fire.

  • The monetary impact to their organization in this partnership is over $51,000. Members will earn over $58,650 in living stipends, $17,211 in education awards, and $6,300 in grocery/rent assistance.

The Impact of Community Effort

This story is exactly what AmeriCorps and the Community Builder Program are all about— empowering organizations, creating sustainable change, and strengthening communities. Stepping Stone Ministries doesn’t just provide a service; they change lives. By working together, we’re not just fixing a building —we’re ensuring that no one in our community has to recover from illness or injury on the streets.

We are providing an opportunity for four individuals to make a lasting impact in Bismarck while providing them with professional development, economic opportunity, and future advancement through education or economic stability.

At the heart of this project is the idea that we are stronger together. Let’s celebrate this collaboration and keep showing up for each other, ensuring that all Host Sites in our Community Builder Program not only navigate these uncertain times but thrive!
